For a quarter-century, if you evented in the mid-Atlantic, there’s a good chance Brian and Penny Ross had a hand in your season. As Virginia Horse Center Eventing returns to Lexington, VA for its end-of-season FEI competition this week (October 29–November 1), the event is pausing to honor the couple who built it into a destination.
The Rosses ran the Virginia Horse Trials for 25 years, starting in 1989. During that time, Virginia Horse Center became a fixture on the mid-Atlantic calendar, and its end-of-season FEI event became a goal for many East Coast riders to mark on their schedules. They will be celebrated at the VHC Eventing Competitors Party, presented by CornerStone Bank, on Friday, October 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Anderson Coliseum Mezzanine.
Competition for VHC Eventing begins on Thursday with the First Horse Inspection for the CCI2*-L and CCI1*-L, with dressage and show jumping commencing on Friday. For more information, visit the Horse Center’s new and updated website here.

Continuing the tone set by the USEA Young Event Horse (YEH) East Coast Championships and dual-winner Caroline Pamukcu, James Alliston swept the top spots in both the USEA YEH West Coast 4-year-old and 5-year-old divisions at Twin Rivers Ranch in Paso Robles, CA this weekend.
“Whether you win it or not, [the YEH program] is wonderful to do and know someone’s opinion, that they like your horse as much as you do,” he said. “I’d never done the 4-Year-Olds before. I’d always done the 5-Year-Olds.”
Sponsor Corner: Get Your Farm Winter-Ready With John Deere
As the competition season winds down, the work at home picks up. Fall is the time to stock the hay barn, tidy up pastures, and get the farm ready for the colder months, and having the right equipment makes all of it easier. John Deere, official equipment supplier of the equine industry since 2001, offers equine association members exclusive savings through the Equine Discounts program.
Whether you’re moving round bales, dragging the arena before the ground freezes, or getting feed and water out to the far paddock in a Gator™ Utility Vehicle, John Deere’s lineup of mowers, tractors, hay equipment and utility vehicles is built for the daily demands of a horse property. It’s all backed by the industry’s most trusted brand and dealer network.
There are two ways to save on John Deere equipment via Equine Discounts:
Full Time Program: for active equine association members with an equine business (breeders, trainers, owners, veterinarians, farriers, hay producers, and more). Save up to 28% off MSRP.
Part Time Program: for anyone with an active equine association membership of 30+ days. Get up to $2,700 in cash discounts, stackable with most other John Deere offers and special rate financing.
Equine Discounts is open to members of national and local equine associations, and a percentage of every sale goes back into supporting the equine industry. That means the equipment that gets your farm through winter also gives back to the sport.
