Product Review: Twenty Four Carrots EasyMeds Cookie Dough

It’s not very often that I would use the words “unique” or “innovative” to describe a horse treat, yet here we are.

When I first heard the concept behind Twenty Four Carrots EasyMeds Cookie Dough product, it was instantly appealing to me as someone who has a horse that takes daily allergy pills. And no, your eyes are reading that correctly, I indeed said “cookie dough”.

It’s an idea I don’t think would’ve ever occurred to me, but it’s fairly genius when you think about it. EasyMeds Cookie Dough is designed to simulate the qualities of actual cookie dough: soft and pliable and easy to portion out into whatever size you want. It’s designed to be fed to horses as-is (before someone asks – no, you don’t bake it).

That makes it the perfect type of vehicle for medications, as you can mold it easily around pills of any shape/size/quantity, or mix it with powder. You can also just give it as a fun and unique treat (I feel as though the pony kids in particular would love this, given how my inner pony kid reacted upon first opening and playing with it).

Looking at the label, I was even more sold, given that it has only a few ingredients, all clean and safe for horses that might be metabolically sensitive. It contains cold-milled golden flax, organic agave (for sweetness that is still low glycemic), and camu camu (don’t worry, I had to google that one too – it’s a fruit-bearing plant).

EasyMeds Cookie Dough is free from soy, added sugar, corn, grains, molasses, and fillers. Considering that my horse who takes the allergy medication is also 19 years old and, well, allergic to pretty much everything, having fewer ingredients is definitely a huge bonus.

While Twenty Four Carrots had definitely piqued my interest with the concept, I wasn’t really sure how it would work in execution. Can you really make a horse treat similar to cookie dough? And more importantly, would horses want to eat it?

Apparently the answer is yes and yes. Not only can you make it, it can be astoundingly similar in texture to the cookie dough we all know and love. It’s soft, moldable, and easy to scoop out of the jar, which makes portioning it out super easy. You can roll it into little balls, mold it around pills, or honestly just hand over a scoop of it as a treat as-is.

As far as horse approval goes, I’d call it a success overall. Three of my four horses liked it, including the one getting the allergy pills. My pickiest horse was not convinced, which I suspect is more about the texture than the flavor. Because it’s so soft and dough-like, it’s definitely different from the crunchy treats he typically likes. If you have an especially suspicious or texture-averse horse, they may be less enthusiastic, but most of the horses I offered it to seemed to like it.

Where the product really shines, IMO, is its intention: hiding medications. Because of the pliable texture, it’s incredibly easy to completely cover pills or integrate powder without the horse being able to pick around the medication. It also sticks together well so that you don’t end up with half-dried crumbles everywhere like you can with some of the other treats meant to hide pills.

Overall, I think this product is genuinely clever and useful. Between the clean ingredient list, the ease of use, and the fact that it actually works well for hiding pills, it’s a fun product that actually serves a purpose.
