Equestrian Canada announced this week that UK-based Mike Winter has sadly withdrawn El Mundo (“Roberto”) from next week’s FEI Eventing World Championships. The 17-year-old KWPN gelding, who had competed at the Paris Olympics in 2024 and is owned by Mike and Emma Winter along with Jonathan Nelson, sustained an injury during the final stages of training for the Championships.
“The care and well-being of Roberto, and of all our equine partners, is paramount,” Mike said in a statement issued by Equestrian Canada on Tuesday. “The most important thing is that Roberto is here at home, being well cared for. Not because of what he has done for us, or what he may still do, but because he is a valued partner entrusted to our care. We have a responsibility to make the best decisions we can for him, always with his long-term welfare at heart and with the goal of creating the best possible outcomes throughout his career and his life.”
Canada will now send just one individual to Aachen next week. The three-time World Championships and Olympic representative for Canada will team up with Sharon Hall and Makayla Rydzik’s Fluorescent Adolescent, who has already arrived in Germany ahead of the start of competition on August 13.
