Hickstead, England – July 27, 2024 – It was a very busy Saturday at the 2024 Agria Royal International Horse Show CSIO 5*. Three important competitions kept spectators on the edge of their seats. In the €28,200 Unex Group Speed Classic CSIO 5*, James Smith (GBR) the win with Juno Rose 23.
Having been drawn sixth to go out of 40 starters, he produced a quick time of 67.71 seconds to put pressure on his rivals.
Several contenders went faster, including Nicole Lockhead Anderson (GBR) and Madagascar Dwerse Hagen, Mark Edwards (GBR) Royale Tale), Matthew Sampson (King Lepantino) and James on his second ride Kosmos A, but poles fell for each to add crucial time penalties that cost them the win.
“I was always going to be trying to win, but everything has to be going right on the day. I’m delighted,” said James. “My mare is naturally quite quick, so I didn’t want to go crazy.”
Final Results – €28,200 Unex Group Speed Classic CSIO 5* – 1.45 m
1) James Smith (GBR) & Juno Rose 23 – 0 – 67.71
2) Lars Kersten (NED) & Boebka VH Marienshof Z – 0 – 69.21
3) Nicole Lockhead Anderson (GBR) & Madagascar Dwerse Hagen – 4 – 69.27
