If you want to auction foals in Germany, you need to bring your A-game. The past three editions of Flanders Foal Auction at Holger Hetzel Stables were a great success and for the upcoming auction on Saturday evening, July 26, Flanders is pulling out all the stops once again. “The collection is top-class. We have some truly exceptional foals and that’s essential, because in Germany we will once again face a professional and critical audience with a keen eye for quality foals,” say Luk Van Puymbroeck and Gerald Lenaerts.
Flanders Foal Auction is part of Holger Hetzel’s prestigious and high-stakes young horse event, the ‘Tiemeyer x Hetzel Young Horse Masters’. A competition centered around young showjumping talent from five to eight years old, it’s the perfect setting for a high-level foal auction. Holger Hetzel, renowned for organizing the annual Holger Hetzel Sport Horse Sales, sees a growing number of visitors each year who are also interested in investing in foals.
22 Different Sires
Thirty foals by 22 different stallions will make their way to Goch, Germany. Leading sire is Chacco Blue with three foals, followed by Ermitage Kalone, Catoki, Comme il Faut, Balou du Reventon and United Touch S, each with two foals represented. “We value variety and diversity and have several standout highlights.”
The auction opens with El Loco Z (Ermitage Kalone x Diamant de Semilly), a half- sister to Crazy in Love, who was sold at Hetzel’s auction at the end of 2023 for one million euros. That nine-year-old gelding, now competing at 1.50m level with Maurice Tebbel, recently finished second in the Grand Prix of Riesenbeck. Another notable Ermitage Kalone filly is Quick Ermita G&K, bred out of the full sister of 1.60m Grand Prix stallion Million Dollar, ridden by Sophie Hinners. Charlie Chaplin van WW Z (Chacco Blue x Kashmir van Schuttershof) comes out of the same dam as Nelson van ’t Roosakker, who competes at the European Championships in La Coruña with Marit Haarr Skollerud this week. The stunning Hajo Z (Heartbreaker x Cornado I) is a grandson of Anka, Marcus Ehning’s legendary mare who won the 2003 World Cup Final in Las Vegas.
Cornelius (Cornet Obolensky x Carell) is a three-quarter brother to Colestus, the stallion who competed at top level for years under Ludger Beerbaum and Christian Kukuk. Bear Z (Baloubet du Rouet x Cornet Obolensky) is a three-quarter brother to the 1.65m Grand Prix horse Dubai du Cedre, now owned by Iron Dames and ridden by Janne Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann.
The auction will conclude with a true gem: Crunch E4U Z (Comme il Faut x Diamant de Semilly), perhaps the most gorgeous foal so far from the esteemed broodmare Jenna van ’t Meulenhof, full sister to Emerald van ’t Ruytershof.
